The boy could not have been more reluctant.
âStrike me,â Marc ordered.
At least Matthias knew better than to argue. But he did close his eyes. Marc batted at the sword with his shield, and Matthias dropped his weapon. âOuch.â
âDonât close your eyes. And hold on to your sword.â
âYes, Master.â
Marc studied Matthias as he bent to pick up the blade. âWas that insolence?â
Matthias looked up in surprise. âNo, Father.â
Of course it hadnât been. Matthias probably didnât know how to be insolent. Marc was only on edge. His sonâs future was at stake. He softened his tone a fraction. âLetâs review your stance. Do you have a good grip on your shield?â
âI think so.â
âHold it more forward. Your right hand is your dominant one, and so your left foot will provide the stability under your strike.â
âBalance.â
âYes. Otherwise any opponent will topple you like a sand castle. Show me.â
Matthias assumed a neutral stance.
âRelax your sword arm.â
Matthias tried and nearly dropped the sword. He caught it, though, shook out his arm, and Marc had a sudden memory of teaching Wolf these same maneuvers. âDonât cock your elbow. No, you can bend it, but donât strike from your elbow. Youâll have less range and no power at all.â
Matthias tried again.
âBetter. Raise your blade and bring it down on my shield.â
It was little more than the previous tap, but at least he hadnât chopped at it. âYou wonât injure me. Do it again.â
He did, a little harder.
âHit me, damn it!â
Matthias raised his sword and swung down on Marcâs shield hard enough to numb his wrist.
âOuch. Good!â
Matthias stared at him in dismay.
âNow a jab. Go! Strike!â
Eyes wide with panic, he jabbed at Marc, who easily fended off the tip of his blade, knocking him back a few steps. âAnd an upswing. Hard from underneath. Come! Strike!â
Matthias let out an involuntary cry and swung upward. Marc shoved his shield at the ungainly swing, but Matthiasâs reach was off. Not only did his sword not connect with Marcâs shield, it flew from his hand to flip end over end above his head. Grabbing the boyâs collar, Marc dragged him several feet backward, and the sword landed harmlessly in the dirt.
âWhy did you let go?â
âI donât know.â
âYes, you do.â
âI panicked.â
âYou did.â
âIâm sorry, Master.â
He was trembling under Marcâs fist, which still clutched his shirt. Flexing his hand, he let go of the tunic, smoothed it against his back. The boyâs gaze slid sideways, toward the chuckles coming from across the yard.
âMatthias.â
His eyes met Marcâs. He was trying very hard to stand bravely. âYes, Master?â
âYou have a good stance. When you donât panic, you have good form. Weâll do it again. And again. And again. It will come, with practice. Do you understand?â
âI think so. You mean Iâll become accustomed to it.â
âThatâs right. Soon, your sword and shield will feel as much a part of your body as your arms. Extensions of them.â
âLike levers.â
âWell, yes.â He had never taught that way, but this was Matthias. He might as well use what the boy had been learning in his lessons all these years.
